THE RENOVATION PROJECT TO CREATE THE HOSPITAL AND SCIENCE CENTER

The NMLC renovation project will convert a 17,000 sq. ft. building that stood deserted on the Town's Main Street for almost a decade. With about 2,800 sq. ft. of new construction, the project includes the building (a total of 19,928 sq. ft.), a pump house next to the Cape Cod Canal, pipes into the Canal to bring salt water to the animal care tanks, and a utility building.

The renovated building will have three functional areas:
1- the Marine Animal Hospital
2- the Marine Animal Discovery Center, including a multi-purpose room and bookstore/giftshop
3- offices and other infrastructure spaces

Renovation and construction alone will cost $8 million, including about $1 million to put pipes into the Cape Cod Canal for salt water for the animal care pools, and another $1 million for the large tank to care for 6- 8 dolphins or small whales. Additional expenses, such as exhibit fabrication and installation, architect's fees, and equipment and furnishings add another $3 million to the project costs.

Design documents are complete and the permitting process has begun. Only the need to complete the funding prevents construction from beginning.
