PROJECT
LOCATION
The NMLC is located on Main Street in the Village of Buzzards
Bay, Town of Bourne, MA, at the edge of the Cape Cod Canal.
The NMLC was invited by the Selectmen of the Town of Bourne and
the town's Economic Development Task Force to locate on the site.
The lease, at $1 per year for 50 years, covers almost four acres
of land donated by the Mobil Oil Corporation for use by the NMLC.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the contiguous land,
has agreed that the NMLC can use an additional two+ acres for parking
and access to Canal water.
The Canal will provide a dependable source of sea water of exceptional
purity and optimal temperature for the facility's animal life support
systems.
By locating on the chosen Canal-side site, the NMLC will be in
the middle of a stranding hot spot, the region with the highest
concentration of strandings in North America: Cape Cod Bay, the
Gulf of Maine, and Nantucket Sound. The site meets other criteria:
protection from extreme weather, easy access to transportation (railroads,
highways, airports, water-ways) and to the academic and scientific
institutions integral to the NMLC's programs. Town water/sewage
lines and public utilities are on the site.
The
site includes degraded wetlands, once salt marsh. The NMLC, in a
partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers, is preparing to restore
and expand the wetlands, returning them to their pre-Canal salt
marsh condition. The restoration project includes creating an access
trail and informational kiosks for the public.
