The National Marine Life Center Campaign

The National Marine Life Center Campaign

While we are operating the interim facility for cold-stunned turtles and stranded seals, we are raising the funds to renovate the NMLC building to create the full marine animal hospital and science center. As a private, non-profit organization, we are not supported by the government.

Therefore, the NMLC Trustees are conducting a campaign for private funds. Contributions to the campaign from individuals, families, businesses and corporations, and foundations are welcome.

The honorary chair of the campaign is Walter Cronkite, former anchor for CBS news. Mr. Cronkite has told NMLC leaders that: "I have lived on Martha's Vineyard and sailed its waters for years. I have taken great pleasure in watching the whales, dolphins and seals in this area and appreciate being a privileged observer of their world. I believe it is our responsibility to take care of them. This hospital is necessary, so we may give something back to these animals now and for the future."

Two well-known scientists also encourage your involvement: Oceanographer Robert Ballard and Primatologist Dame Jane Goodall.

Please join Walter Cronkite, Bob Ballard and Jane Goodall and help build the full marine animal hospital and education center. Make a membership donation today by clicking on the seal's head, a link to our secure donations page.

Renovation and construction alone will cost $8 million, including about $1 million to put pipes into the Cape Cod Canal for salt water for the animal care pools, and another $1 million for the large tank to care for 6- 8 dolphins or small whales. Additional expenses, such as exhibit fabrication and installation, architect's fees, and equipment and furnishings add another $3 million to the project.
